Mac’s Motorcycle Club visits pensioners in Amanzimtoti
At this month's meeting, Saarp invited guest speakers from various divisions of Mac's Motorcycle Club to share about their community involvement.
MEMBERS of various divisions of Mac’s Motorcycle Club (MC) recently visited a group of pensioners to speak about their hobby and community projects, as well as to debunk stereotypes commonly associated with bikers.
Mac’s MC, which has been around for about 44 years, has three divisions; 1%ers (one percenters) which is the core of the club that makes up the brotherhood; Familia which focuses on spouses and families; and the Young Guns who are bikers aged 16 to 21 who love to ride and learn.

The South African Association of Retired Persons’ (Saarp) chairperson, Megan Oschmann, said that each month, the group invites an interesting guest speaker, and this month, she thought it would be a good idea to invite the bikers to share their hobby and lifestyle with the oldies.
“People are under the impression that bikers are just full of tattoos, rough and rev their bikes loudly, but behind the scenes, they are working normal full-time jobs and assisting the community where they can,” she said.
President of Mac’s Toti Familia Chapter, Lionel van der Linde, shared these sentiments and said biker groups have changed over the years and now have a strong focus on their communities and those in need.
“Last year, the club stepped in to assist in raising funds for Operation Bobbi Bear. We collected funds at traffic lights and hosted a rally in the Amanzimtoti CBD. We raised about R200 000,” he said.
President of Mac’s Durban Chapter, Marius Visser, added that they are a Christian-based club that assists women and children who are being abused.
The presentations concluded with a talk by Lovell Heathcote of the Unashamed Motorcycle Ministry, who spoke about the various ways they take care of the elderly in their communities.

Saarp meets once a month on a Monday at the Amanzimtoti Bowling Club at 09:30 for 10:00. It is open to all over 50s and promotes activities which include meetings, speakers and outings.
