Recently selected to represent the KwaZulu-Natal U13 softball team, Gian is gearing up for an exciting tournament at Camp Discovery in Limpopo this December. Instead of simply asking for donations, he decided to roll up his sleeves and make his goal a reality.
With his mother’s support, Gian set up shop, quickly selling out his lemonade and earning praise from the local community. Carol Lane, a resident inspired by his efforts, cheered on Gian’s determination to fund his trip on his own.
“The lemonade was delicious. Well done, parents; you did not take the easy way out like others do. My pet peeve is learners begging at robots for rugby tours and thereby bringing up a nation of beggars. Well done on educating your son that if you want something, you work for it,” she said.
The community echoed this sentiment, with another resident, Carmen Mulvaney, emphasising the value of earning one’s way.
“There are so many ways to teach children properly. Those who stand on corners begging just let the team spirit down so badly. So well done to this youngster and his parents for a good lesson learnt and an interesting experience never to be forgotten,” said Carmen.
Gian’s mom, Megan, thanked everyone who came by, offering support and encouragement. And for anyone who missed it, Gian plans to be back with more lemonade on November 2, weather permitting, at Gus Brown Road, Warner Beach.
