R38m jewellery store robbery: Wanted suspects arrested

The suspects were linked to a jewellery store robbery in Port Elizabeth where R38m worth of goods were stolen.

TWO men, who robbed a Port Elizabeth jewellery store of about R38m worth of goods, were arrested in the Folweni area during a joint crime intelligence operation recently.

Charnel Hattingh, head of communications and marketing for the Fidelity Services Group, said members of its Specialised Intervention Unit, together with the Port Elizabeth organised crime unit and eThekwini infrastructure task team, acted on information received regarding the whereabouts of two wanted business robbery suspects in the Folweni and Umlazi areas.

“One of the suspects was found at his house and arrested for being involved in the jewellery store robbery, where about R38m worth of goods was stolen. He was detained at the Umlazi police cells, and it was confirmed that he was linked to the robbery as the driver of the vehicle that travelled to Port Elizabeth to conduct the offence,” she said.

The second suspect was also located at another home and arrested. He was positively linked to the crime scene from camera footage.

Hattingh said, “A search of the suspect’s homes led to the recovery of numerous spectacles and sunglasses that had been stolen from an optometrist in a recent Durban central business robbery. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was advertising these spectacles and sunglasses on social media.”

She congratulated everyone involved in the successful joint operation for their great teamwork in bringing the suspects to book.
