Repairs done, Amanzimtoti reservoirs battle to fill

Although repairs at the South Coast Augmentation booster pump station were done timeously, residents were left with dry taps for days at end.

WHILE repairs have been completed and water pumping has resumed at the South Coast Augmentation (SCA) booster pump station in Umlazi, some areas of Amanzimtoti are still experiencing water shortages.

Some residents in Doonside, Lower Illovo, Adams Mission, Fakazi, and Kingsburgh have had to rely on water tankers for over a week.
The pump station broke down on December 11, leaving areas between Umlazi and Pennington without water.

eThekwini Municipality’s communications manager, Mduduzi Ncalane, said new pumps were installed after the old one’s failure restricted the flow into Toti Water Treatment Works.

“Currently the affected water supply systems are in recovery mode, with water supply already restored in some areas. The restoration of the water supply varies. Water levels and storage at Toti Waterworks has improved, further assisting the recovery of dependent reservoirs. However, the gravity reservoirs fed from this system are taking longer to recover. This includes Lewis Drive, Doonside, Launceston and Almond reservoirs,” said Ncalane.

He added that technicians were monitoring these reservoirs and water was anticipated to be fully restored by today (December 19).

For more information regarding water supply, the public can download the eThekwini Municipality’s mobile app to log faults or send a WhatsApp message to 073 1483 477. Alternatively, they can email Eservices@durban.gov.za or call the toll-free number 080 311 1111.
