Suspected stolen cable recovered in Prospecton

eThekwini Metro officers were travelling on the N2 towards Prospecton when they noticed a bakkie loaded with suspicious white bags.

TWO men are set to appear in court soon after they were found with a load of suspected stolen cables and other metals in their car.

Police spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes said that on February 3, eThekwini Metro officers attached to the Economic Infrastructure Task Team (EITT) were travelling on the N2 towards Prospecton when they noticed a white bakkie with two occupants in it, loaded with suspicious white bags.

“This vehicle was followed to Jeffels Street in Prospecton where it was intercepted. They then waited with the vehicle and its occupants until EITT officers arrived. Upon inspecting the contents of the bags in the presence of the two occupants it was established that there were copper cables and bus bars inside the bags. Both occupants could not give a reasonable explanation for having the cables,” said Rhynes.

The 498.5kg of copper cables, 654.5kg of tin copper, and 90kg of bus bars were estimated to be worth R310 000.

Both suspects aged 38 and 34 years were arrested and charged with contravening Sections 36 and 37 for having suspected stolen property and receiving property reasonably suspected to be stolen. Their vehicle was also seized as evidence.
