Mthembu’s 33-day epic adventure ended on January 26, having taken him through countries that included Namibia, Botswana, Angola, the Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Ghana.

In January last year, he completed another ride that took him through East African countries until he reached Rwanda. He said the reason he undertakes these trips is to explore Africa’s endless beauty while meeting new people.

“It’s rare that people see a South African doing this as it’s mostly people from Europe and America who ride through the continent. It’s always a beautiful experience,” said Mthembu.

He did not experience any mechanical difficulties and said the bike’s comfort and handling made the trip enjoyable and was not taxing on his body. It was easier getting through certain countries than others, with the language barrier at some borders being a contributing factor. The poor condition of roads in certain countries was another drawback, made worse by rains in the southern hemisphere.

“After crossing the Equator the rain became better as it was winter there,” he said.

Mthembu is a member of the Durban Night Riderz Motorcycle Club and thanked it for its support.

“I’d also like to thank the WBHO Construction team for helping with tracking devices and for creating a WhatsApp group to offer me support,” he said.

He still wishes to explore more of Africa and hopes to ride to Egypt soon.
