Blankets galore for Caxton Cares Square by Square project
SUN staff member, Gerda Mac Gregor, is just a phone call away if you feel uninspired, unmotivated or struggling to remember the next step.
THE Caxton Cares Square by Square Project has extended beyond the borders of our distribution footprint. Which is great news, taking into account that the more people there are to crochet and knit 15 x 15cm blocks, the more blankets will be donated to senior citizens.

With already 63 complete blankets, beautifully created by an eager crocheting and knitting community, and another four that are almost complete, we are getting closer to the 100 mark. “I am in complete awe of the generosity of the community. It is properly buzzing everywhere I go as so many people are talking about how great the project is,” said the editor of the Southlands / South Coast SUN, Roelien D’Amico.
“I am excited that the generosity has reached beyond our borders because it means that more elderly people will be blessed, just in time for the really cold months. I am truly humbled by this,” she said.
“The words ‘thank you’ seems inadequate compared to the amount of blessings we are receiving currently. Despite this, here is a big thanks to those who have, and still are, contributing to this project. As always, SUN staff member, Gerda Mac Gregor, is just a phone call away if you feel uninspired, unmotivated or struggling to remember the next step.”

D’Amico said that a community member made her aware that there are people requesting wool under the project’s name. “Should you wish to donate to these people, make sure that they are part of the project, and not requesting wool for personal gain. The aim of the project is to help our elderly, not for people to defraud the generosity of the community for personal gain. Any donation should be dropped off at the SUN office. This is the only way for us to keep track of the donation, distribute wool if we have enough and to ensure that we have a winner at the end of the project.”
D’Amico added that a WhatsApp group was created to give those who participate or just need a helping hand, the encouragement to continue as well as an update on the blankets received. Send a message to 079 728 6787, call the office on 031 903 2341 or send an email to sunads@dbn.caxton.co.za if you want to be part of the journey.
Wool, blanket or block donations can be dropped of at The Mudpie Co, 771 Marine Drive, The Bluff, or at the SUN office, 33 Main Road, Doonside, Amanzimtoti. The closing date for this project is June 2, with distribution to take place in July. There are a few spot prizes up for grabs.
The person who donates the most wool, or crochets or knits the most blocks, will win a special treat sponsored by Pia Health and Beauty Spa, Amanzimtoti. There are also breakfast vouchers from Clear Waters Spur in Beach Road up for grabs.
