N2 south to close for eZimbokodweni River bridge repairs

The N2 southbound between Joyner and Dickens Road will be closed at night on certain days to allow for repairs to the eZimbokodweni River bridge.

BETWEEN 22:00 tonight (April 30) and 05:00 tomorrow, the N2 southbound carriageway will be closed off to traffic between Joyner and Dickens Road to allow for repair work on the eZimbokodweni River bridge.

Further repairs will be conducted on May 2 and 3, leading to the road’s closure between 22:00 and 05:00 on both days. The northbound carriageway on the bridge underwent the same repairs on April 29 and 30, which involved jacking up the deck of the bridge to keep it level.

In November last year, the bridge partially collapsed when one of its pillars crumbled, causing the surface to become uneven and the road unsafe to use. As a temporary measure, the sunken deck was jacked from underneath to make the road surface level again. This allowed traffic to flow again after almost two weeks of diversions and crippling traffic delays.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd’s project manager for KZN, Serisha Sukraj, advised motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra travel time, particularly when heading to key travel hubs such as airports.

“We urge all road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic signs, and comply with speed limits while approaching and navigating the construction zone,” she said.

Southbound traffic will be diverted at Joyner Road into Kingsway Road, where it can rejoin the N2 at Moss Kolnik Drive near Galleria Mall.
