Observed annually on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, International Nurses Day recognises the vital contributions nurses make to society. Nightingale is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.
During the visit the Trust’s chairperson Busani Luthuli expressed gratitude to the nurses, acknowledging the challenges they face, such as shortages of equipment and medication.
“We implore you to continue following in the footsteps of pioneers like Sister Florence Nightingale, Sister Cecilia Makiwane, and Sister Dora Nginza. Your profession is a calling, and we love and appreciate you,” said Luthuli.
Sister NY Zungu, head of the clinic, used the opportunity to highlight the clinic’s role in the community and to clarify which services are offered and which are not. She noted that a lack of understanding about the clinic’s scope often leads to unfair criticism of staff on social media.
Among the concerns raised by the nursing staff was the poor condition of the access road leading to the clinic, which further complicates their daily duties. The Umnini Community Trust committed to addressing these issues and pledged to return with positive feedback and possible solutions in the near future.
