Sandwich drive feeds hungry Amanzimtoti learners

The Domino Foundation makes and distributes peanut butter sandwiches to learners at various schools through its nutrition programme.

OVER the past few years, the Domino Foundation has assisted learners who do not have enough to eat by making and distributing sandwiches through its nutrition programme.

To achieve this, they depend on the generosity of partners and donors for the raw materials to make the sandwiches. The programme’s leader, Cathy Whittle, said consistency of supply is always a challenge.

“Our communities in both north and south eThekwini are very generous, but we need to ensure that we have a constant supply of both bread and peanut butter. We need to know that all of our beneficiaries on the programme can depend on nutritious high-protein ‘food for thought’ every school day,” said Whittle.

The programme turns out around 150 000 sandwiches each year between its kitchens in Durban North and Amanzimtoti. That works out at some 294 000 slices or 24 501 loaves.

Cheryl Dann, who leads the Amanzimtoti team, has joined Whittle in asking churches, businesses and other organisations to commit to a weekly donation of bread. Dann said her kitchen alone needs at least an additional 150 loaves a week. They are also appealing to schools to step up to the mark by guaranteeing a chosen number of jars of peanut butter every week of the term.

“Either service clubs in the school or the whole school community could partner with us to make sure that other learners in our city know they will have something to see them through their hours in the classroom,” said Dann.

Community members can also commit to making a certain number of sandwiches each week. Organisations, businesses and schools can contact Dann on nutritionsouth@domino.org.za to join the initiative.
