eThekwini invests millions in local farmers

eThekwini believes the investment will ensure that small-scale farmers can compete effectively in formal markets.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has announced a substantial investment aimed at supporting local farmers and strengthening the agricultural economy in Umbumbulu and other areas.

At the forefront of this effort is the Vegetable Packhouse Project, a major initiative scheduled to run from September to June 2026 in Umbumbulu. The project has been allocated R4m for the 2025/26 financial year. Once operational, the facility will serve as a central hub for vegetable handling and distribution, directly benefiting more than 100 farmers in the area. By consolidating collection, grading, packaging, and storage processes under one roof, the packhouse is expected to improve product quality, expand market access, and reduce logistical challenges that often hinder local producers.

Deputy Director of the municipality’s Agri-Business Department, Vuyo Jayiya, stated that the investment is a crucial step towards building a more inclusive and resilient agricultural sector.

“This project will play a key role in strengthening emerging farmers, improving food security, and unlocking economic opportunities for historically marginalised rural communities,” said Jayiya.

He added that the Umbumbulu Vegetable Packhouse forms part of a broader programme aimed at developing sustainable farming enterprises. This includes constructing new infrastructure, refurbishing existing facilities, and delivering targeted skills development for agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises.

Jayiya also said the municipality believes these efforts will lay the foundation for long-term transformation in the local agribusiness value chain, ensuring that small-scale farmers can compete effectively in formal markets and contribute meaningfully to the regional economy.
