The formal bail application for JP van Niekerk, Lloyd Ramsbottom, Banele Mseleku, and Njabulo Dlamini got underway amid strong opposition from the State. All four men are charged in connection with the death of Edwards, 32, whose body was discovered inside the Mooi Hawens property in Winklespruit on April 9.
The four, along with the deceased, were patients of Tetelestai Recovery Centre, situated across the road from where Edwards’ body was found. They were arrested on April 26 and made their first court appearance on June 30.
The defence team, led by Mark Tomlinson and including Senzo Mthembu, John Batchelor, and Advocate Ayanda Xaba, challenged the State’s opposition to bail, which was backed by an affidavit submitted by the investigating officer. During proceedings on July 4, the magistrate sought clarification on several issues raised in the State’s affidavit before postponing the matter to July 9 to address these concerns.
Tomlinson, who represents Van Niekerk and Ramsbottom, defended his clients’ right to bail, citing public pressure on the case.
“Unfortunately, in the court of public opinion, largely due to the media frenzy surrounding this case, many have already decided these young men are guilty. My clients have a right to a fair trial, and it is my job to ensure they get one,” he said.
All four accused maintain their innocence, claiming no involvement in Edwards’ death. The case has been postponed to August 19 for further investigation.
