Estelle van Eeden of Sparrow Trust and the Amanzimtoti CPF tackled cyber safety, as well as increasingly common scams elderly residents face. She encouraged women to employ a buddy-system when going out, as there is strength in numbers.
“Take a friend along, it makes you less vulnerable,” she said. In addition, she urged them to avoid withdrawing cash at ATMs, and to instead use till point services at supermarkets.
Warner Beach Neighbourhood Watch’s (WBNW) Chris Upton explained to residents that WBNW has 28 active members patrolling around three hours a night, and an equal number of camera operators. He encouraged the elderly women to be a part of its WhatsApp group to stay abreast with community-related matters.
Upton said, “Every incident needs to be reported. A big problem in our area is reluctance to open cases. Crimes are then overlooked and it makes the area look crime-free.”
Towards the latter end of the Women’s Day event, the fun began. Jabulani’s Liz Naude said the women thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the games and delectable snacks, making the morning perfect.
