In the SUN 35 years ago: Leopard’s presence confirmed in Toti
At the time, the rural area behind Amanzimtoti was vacant of dwellings and had lush forests where it is suspected the leopard had escaped from.
THE April 20, 1990, edition of the South Coast SUN featured two boys, Gary de Boer (12), and Michael Purvis (11), who had discovered droppings and the pawprints of a leopard at Amanzimtoti’s Ilanda Wilds.

The boys later took Gary’s father, Vic, to the site, and he took the droppings to Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, where they were positively identified as those of a leopard. The pawprints that were found near the riverbank were also positively confirmed.
As the news spread, Isundu Drive residents reported that their dogs had been highly agitated in the evenings.
