Amanzimtoti High learner in epic stage play

The storyline journeys through Egypt as brothers Ramses and Moses, raised in a kingdom of privilege, are suddenly divided by a secret past.

AMANZIMTOTI High School learner, Ezekhethelo Zulu, is one of the young actors from the Young Performers Project (YPP) who are wowing crowds as part of the cast of the stage play, The Prince of Egypt, at the Playhouse Company theatre in Durban.

Making its debut on July 10, the epic musical has enjoyed full houses, standing ovations and enthusiastic audiences. It runs until July 19.

No newcomer to the stage, Ezekhethelo starred in a musical adaptation of The Little Mermaid JR, which was staged at The Milkwood Theatre in Durban North in April. In The Prince of Egypt, she plays Nefertari, the queen of Egypt, and is part of a cast of 134 learners from 42 schools.

The storyline journeys through the wonders of ancient Egypt as Ramses and Moses, two young men raised together as brothers in a kingdom of privilege, find themselves suddenly divided by a secret past. One must rule as pharaoh, and the other must rise and free his true people. Both face a destiny that will change history forever.

The Prince of Egypt is directed by Roberto Pombo, with choreography by Evashnee Pillay, music direction by Des Govender, sound design by Ant Govender, set and prop design by Nicolene Steyn, lighting design by Evan le Roux, and costumes by Kathy Singery. Pombo said the play provides a message of hope, courage, faith and the belief that even in the darkest moments, miracles are possible.

“In our current socio-political climate, stories like these are important as they remind us that compassion, resilience and unity can overcome even the greatest obstacles,” said Pombo.

In recent years, to provide maximum experience for the young actors, and theatre options for audiences, YPP has staged up to three productions a year: over the Easter, July and Christmas holidays. In recent years, it has staged The Little Mermaid Jr, Annie, Shrek, Elf the Musical and Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
