The contest’s theme for this year was “Harmony in Humanity,” and it was up to entrants to figure out what it means to them and translate that into a beautiful poster.
Kingsburgh Lions Club president, Esmé Nel said that the artworks were on display during the event and the young artists were accompanied by their proud parents and teachers.
Judges, Christine Andrews, Wendy Cooke-Tonnesen and Christina Naidoo had to narrow down a total of 65 entries into just a top three.
“The top winners were based on originality and creative freshness. It was further judged according to artistic merit, the technical quality skill design execution and overall aesthetic value of the art work. It was also judged against the expression of theme, how effectively the learners’ art work visually interpreted and communicated the theme,” explained Nel.
Third place went to Heather Radcliffe, from Amanzimtoti Primary School, while second was awarded to Diyah Neermul and the overall winner was a Jamie Bosman, who represented Sharon Zulch Art with Kids.
Jamie Bosman said that she looked at other artworks for ideas from famous artists and those she knows personally.
“I wanted a dark outside and a nice bright inside which would catch your eye. There’s so much of darkness around in the world and as we move towards peace and harmony, it should be bright and everyone should be happy. We should aim for a happy world free from war,” said Jamie Bosman.
She added that winning was an unexpected, yet welcome surprise. “I was just doing it for fun. I enjoy making art. I think everyone else’s art was really nice as well,” said Jamie.
