Meet Kuswag’s eager English stream teachers
It has been a smooth transition so far for Kuswag Skool, which introduced several new teachers to take on the year ahead.
IT IS a daily learning experience for Kuswag Skool as it navigates its new normal, with an English stream now among its offerings for Grades R, 1 and 8. Among the measures the school has taken to ensure a smooth transitory period is hiring two new Grade Eight teachers.

Shaun Ross shifted gears from Kingsway High School to Kuswag. Mandie Pretorius, who went out of her comfort zone to teach Kuswag’s primary school learners last year, is now returning to form as most of her experience comes from teaching high school English.

Ross proudly said that the Grade Eights seem to be really eager. He explained that he is approaching the new environment without expectations. Both teachers explained they are adapting well and tackling challenges as they come as a unit.
Pretorius added that when she tasked her class with writing an essay about their first few days of high school, of over 60 learners, there was not a single negative experience shared by the children.
Outside of the classroom, Ross enjoys fly fishing, playing the guitar and piano, and gaming on his computer. Faith is important to him as a devout Christian. Pretorius relishes long road trips on her motorcycle. She likes to listen to jazz and rock music.
English stream head Elsabe Beukes’ excitement was infectious as she expressed her hopefulness for the future of the school. She showed off videos of the children dancing, having a good time and getting along during the school’s open day prior to the term’s commencement.
“The children are positive and are gelling quite well,” said Beukes. She joked that the volume has increased a bit. “I’m sure there will be hiccups along the way. It’s part of the journey,” she said.
