EDITOR – A response to the recent letter headlined ‘Recycle to save Toti’ which called out “Can somebody please take responsibility for recycling in Toti this year”.
So often, we see something amiss, yet expect ‘somebody (to) take responsibility’.
How about Dear Mr / Ms Don’t Kill the World stepping up to the mark and doing the necessary research to get such a project off the ground in Toti? Rather than suffering an aching heart, there are a number of options beyond the orange bag system. Although not the best time of year, due to a new tender processing for 2016 – which is hampered as always by the unfortunate political play and ‘work for pals’ – a few phone calls last year did eventually net us bags for the block of flats where I live.
Some options include contacting DSW education and waste minimisation on 031-303-1665. The more pressure residents bring to bear, the more likely we are to see results.
Join the KZN Recycling Forum and attend meetings. To this end, contact USE-IT on 031-7652349 for further information. You will learn much about recycling initiatives in KZN and make useful contacts.
Take a slow drive around Toti to find the location of paper and glass recycling bins.
Poinsettia Park has a glass bin and also a bag for cans, and is willing to take from outside.
Last, but by no means least, our local recycling collector, Bongani Mkhizwe, spends many hours in all weather, pushing his ‘wheelie bin’ around Toti, collecting glass and plastic bottles, and aluminum cans. He fills many one ton storage bags with this material, keeping them at the far north end of the taxi rank until it is collected by one of the major recycling centres. Simply drop off your recyclables, and you will be assisting a hard-working man to earn a decent living.
Finally, Toti Conservancy will be focusing more attention on solid waste in 2016, and you are invited to join and make a real contribution towards saving Toti. For more information cwinson6412@gmail.com
