Missing bridge railings pose a threat

The poor pedestrians that use the bridge are at threat, should they lose their footing or trip.

EDITOR – Has anyone else noticed the hectically dangerous situation that’s been allowed to develop at the Athlone Park bridge over the Twini River, near the Nyati Road turn-off?

It is diabolical that quite so much of the bridge railings has gone missing.

It’s now so bad that most of the eastern railing is non-existent. I don’t know if this due entirely to theft or also because of the work that has gone on with a pipe that crosses the bridge, but it really can’t be allowed to remain that way for any longer.

The poor pedestrians that use the bridge are at threat, should they lose their footing or trip. They’ll end up over the bridge and in the river. Motorists too, could find themselves in a real pickle should there be a serious accident and a car is forced onto the verge.

The railing is there for a reason, and I would imagine metal thieves have made their gains of it. Surely the city should prioritise the fitment of a similar, concrete-type railing? It makes sense from a safety perspective.
