Two UGC frog golf teams leap into the prizes

A reminder to all that the 2-for-1 special has only a couple of weeks to run.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) is proud of the menfolk this week after their incredible performance at inter-club, played this last weekend.

After two days of intense golf, Umkomaas’ frog team, Tom Naicker, Saga Reddy and Nelson Moonsamy, were the first team to qualify to play in the alliance on Sunday.

The senior frog side, comprising of Devlyn Fraser, Derek Airey and Ganas Naicker were way down in the list in 13th place and only just qualified to play in their alliance match on Sunday but play they did.

That was the only ‘gap’ they needed and combining, dovetailing well or whatever you want to call it, the senior frogs did amazingly well to go on to win their division’s alliance. Not to be outdone, the frog side also won their division in the alliance – so two teams entered and two teams winning in such style. Congratulations to both teams from all at Umkomaas on their 100% success rate – you deserve your win – UGC is enormously proud of you all, especially the chairman.

It would seem that the players on the PGA circuit are squeezing their last few tournaments in before the Christmas break and our ‘boys’, Garth and Tim, are no exception.

Everyone who reads the local papers are familiar with these two names of which UGC are so terribly proud. Garth Mulroy played in Turkey this weekend in the Turkish Open, played at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Antalya, Turkey, shooting a 69 on both Friday and Sunday to finish on -14 in tied 18th place. This is great golf by anyone’s standards and so congratulations to Garth on a superb tournament. On the other side of the world, just off the coast of Georgia, USA on St Saints Island, Tim Clark played in the McGladrey Classic Open. He played on a course similar to St Saints in a previous tournament last year. Tim played exceptionally well in this year’s Classic with weather conditions on the ‘island’ being dodgy at best, as the forecast was very windy on the last couple of days, which suits Tim’s game down to the ground and come through he did. He played immaculate golf, shooting a 62 on Sunday and tie-ing for second place, with one time leader, Briny Baird on -13.

The winner of this Classic Open, Chris Kirk, had to really work hard and play well to finish on -14.

After all the wonderful news of inter-club and UGC’s PGA boys, Wednesday’s competition is no exception. The club welcomed Jos Matthysen and Peter van Niekerk to the competition and once again, local knowledge was the key.

A face golfers don’t see very often on a Wednesday is Mike Cromhout, who took home the winner’s prize on 39 points, counting out Sierd Lamminga into second place, also on 39 points. Taking third spot was Andy Davidge, who counted out Jos Matthysen into fourth place, who in turn counted out Hans Beuthe into fifth place, all on 38 points.

Saturday’s competition had a bit of a twist in as much it was a three ball alliance with household products up for grabs and a hamper to match. Thanks to Clayton for starting it all up with his donation of prizes. Since there was inter-club down the coast, UGC welcomed N Mahabeer and B Kirsten from Scottburgh to prize giving, as well as Les van Niekerk and Renzo Avellini to the competition.

The winners, on a score of 115 points was Barrie Taylor, Warren Taylor and Hans Beuthe with Viv Naicker, Tash Naicker and Dean Naicker (same family) in second place with 111 points. In third spot was Jeff Govender, Johan Hugo and Simon van den Bosch on 110 points followed by Sabiha Bacaus, Jacques Hulley and Les van Niekerk on fourth place on 108 points. Last but not least was Mike Cromhout, Denise Nell and Val Hazell finishing on 107 points. Nearest the pin on the fourth was Warren Taylor and on the 13th was Michelle van der Merwe. A great day enjoyed by all.

A reminder to all that the two-for-one special only has a few weeks to run, ending on 30 November. But the Sunday special is still in place for all to enjoy, cheaper golf after 11.30am. Contact the club for details on 039-973-1042.

Kidz Golf will be winding down soon, all are reminded that there is no Kidz Golf during the holidays.
