Fundraising drives Toti GC ahead of women’s tourney

Toti Golf Club to undergo renovations.

Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) appeals to local business and the public to support its fundraising efforts ahead of the prestigious women’s inter-club competition in October and its centenary next year.

Bruce Whiting, a member of AGC for the past 10 years, and Jacqui Porrill, the women’s golf captain, have joined forces to fundraise for the revamp of the club as well as the competition.

The KZNLGA women’s inter-club competition is the longest running women’s golf event in South Africa. About 300 women will compete for honours, playing three days of foursome golf. “The spin-off to the club and community is huge,” said Jacqui. “These women will need accommodation for four nights and they will support local businesses. It is a good advert for our town. We can show Toti has the facilities to host such a prestigious event and showcase it as a premier holiday destination.”

But before the golfers come streaming into town, the club needs some renovation. “The roof is being painted, as well as the whole club,” said Bruce. “The bar has been renovated and the floor needs to be re-done.We need new chairs outside and the men’s changeroom needs to be revamped. We also need a slasher for the fairways and a rough cutter, which cost in the region of R15,000 to R20,000 each. All this needs to be done by September, ahead of the women’s competition. To accomplish this, we need to raise as much money as we can.”

The club has two fundraiser events on its card to date. It will host a school day on Saturday, 19 April and a group day, sometime in June.
