Over 300 golfers descend on mid-South Coast courses for Sardine Run

The Farmers Classic is played over 3 days to various formats and Dudley and his intrepid team won the tournament.

MOST of this week’s Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) report is all about the Sardine Run, as the club had three days of magnificent weather and three days of great and not-so-great golf.

But the ‘Run’ itself was an unqualified success at all three clubs – Umkomaas, Scottburgh and Selborne.

To all the players – there were over 300 of them – congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the golfers who just had a bit of a rough time. It goes without saying that with the glorious weather and the camaraderie of the players, whether old friends or new, the atmosphere was something so special. Congratulations to the organisers, especially to all the staff and members of UGC who assisted in so many ways and Jimmy Spear up in the Nomads Whale Bar on the roof, a huge thank you. Mike Powell did a sterling job on the golf course, not one negative comment, only high praise to the greenkeeper and his very limited staff. Well done Michael.

To all the sponsors, Sappi, Halfway Malanda, Weiss VW to name a few, who donated much needed funds and so on towards the smooth running of the ‘Run’, not forgetting Gregg Andersson who helped enormously by donating the fire and braai pit for the raffle and to all the members who donated ‘stuff’ for the incredible raffle hamper. Many thanks to you all. To the ‘upcountry boys’ who motored down to the coast to experience the Sardine Run, it was great to see them all again. UGC hopes all had a great time. It was just a pity that the little ‘silver fish’ didn’t arrive on cue, better luck next year. Congratulations to the following teams – in first place Drive Rite (268), second were CMC Air Conditioners (266), in third place Wagon Burners (265). Well done Jeff, Saga, Nelson and George and in fourth place were the Barking Dogs (264). Well done to all the winners.

Belated congratulations go to Dudley Pringle and his Selborne partners on winning the Farmers Classic played at Umdoni Golf Club last week. The Farmers Classic is played over three days to various formats and Dudley and his intrepid team won the tournament. Congratulations to the Pringle team on their achievement.

Also played last weekend was the Allerton league at the Bluff National Golf Club. The Umkomaas team only just won by the skin of their collective teeth – 61/2 to 51/2. Congrats to the Allerton league team in their smart league outfits and good luck to all at their next league encounter.

Wednesday was the usual individual stableford where the club welcomed visitors Bertie van Jaarsveld, Magda and Mike Espach and Herman Steyn and his team to the club. Unusually, there was a woman winner in the form of Michelle van der Merwe with 37 points, followed by visitor, Bertie van Jaarsveld in second spot with 36 points. Bertie, in turn counted out both big Garth Wilyman and Wally Kent into third and fourth places, respectively all on 36 points.

Next weekend’s competitions are fourball betterball stableford on Saturday, 21 June with social golf on Sunday, 22 June.

Good luck to the girls who are playing in the second inter region match in Pietermaritzburg at Maritzburg Golf Club. Travel safely and play well.
