Isipingo footballers plan gala reunion
They will recall memories of their golden years from the 70s and 80s.
EX-FOOTBALLERS from the 70s and 80s of the Isipingo and districts Football Association who made Isipingo football a force to be reckoned with, will be recalling memories of their golden years at a gala reunion in Platt Drive, Isipingo Hills on Saturday, 30 August.
Isipingo and district produced top teams which included Malabar Sports, Colleen Athletic, Isingo Suburbs, Ocean City, Lincoln City, Reunion Santos Old Boys, Isipingo United, Protea Power Isipingo Hills and Dynamoes.
Professional players Gopi Naidoo, Adam Arbee, Kevin Francis, Walla Marais, Vincent Pillay, Bob Williams and the late Charlie Sooben emerged from the Isipingo league and played in the premier league of Southern Natal alongside teams, Royals, Sappi, Dalberton and Callies Spartak. Malabar was crowned league champions in 1981 after edging out Bluff Rangers to take the title. The cherry on top was when Malabar was voted team of the year in 1982 in the Southern Natal league. Derbies between Ocean and Reunion teams; Malabar and Lincoln; Dynamoes and Protea Power; Colleens and Oceans were a joy to watch. Teams from Isipingo also feautured prominently in the Clover Cup.
The reunion promises to be a nostalgic evening, with old acquaintances recalling their highs and lows of the golden years that made football the beautiful game.
