Octogenarian with a winning touch

Members wishing to attend the New Year’s Eve party are reminded to put their names on the list.

LOFTY van Tonder, who celebrated his 80th birthday last week, showed that he still has the winning touch by coming from behind to beat Greg McLeod in a quarter final game of the Brad Cox singles at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club.

Everyone looks forward to seeing him play Doreen Salmond in the next leg of this exciting competition.

In the drawn fours, the team of Vince Phaal, Pete Shepard, Denny Denysschen and Shawn Sutherland held onto their early lead to defeat Ian Crouch, Mike Roberts, Trevor Dempsey and Ben Venter. In the nominated trips Vince Marriott, Ray Robinson and Peter Barnes took the lead from the 9th end to defeat Adie Fuller, Alf Bingham and Andrew Pearce.

Last weekend saw the annual ‘turkey day’ Christmas competitions. The women’s winners were Doreen Salmond, Maureen van der Poel and Maggie Robertson. Runners-up were Julie Sutherland, Jane Coetzee and Tokkie de Kock. First session went to Robyn Hutton, Jenny Delport and Jeannette Clarence, and second session was won by Marion Crouch, Jeanne Alexander and Linda McGregor. The winning team in the men’s competition was Robbie Roberts, Pete Shepard and Chis van der Westhuizen. Coy Schrauwen, ‘Captain’ Terry Morgan and John Allers were runners-up. Dennis Hughes, Pietro Calliochi and Mike Roberts won 1st session, while Glen Scorgie, Brian Crause and Ian McDonald won the second session. Neville Roscoe’s key number was drawn at TGIF, but no joy there and the box remained locked. The prize goes up to around R3,000 next week. However, Tony Darley was happy to win the attendance prize, so that will be back to R100 next week.

The last competition of the year will be ‘Big Chicks’ on 21 December so inform skips in time if you are not available to play. Greens will be open for tabs-in social games as always during the Christmas break. Apologies go to last week’s birthday people: Barbara Beamson, Lofty van Tonder, Jock Meldrum, Jerry Gertzen, Barry Buckland, Clive Hambley, Lysbeth McDonald and Ian Crouch for the omission of their names from the club report. It is hoped they had a great birthday. Members celebrating birthdays in the following weeks until the end of the year are Yvonne Wright, Hennie van der Walt, Debbie Groom, Peter Barnes, Doug Joubert, Ian Shearer, Ken Pollard, Piet Barnard, Mervyn Conway and Chris van der Westhuizen. Members wishing to attend the New Year’s Eve party are reminded to put their names on the list. This is always a great party, with great music, so bring in the New Year with all your friends at the club. Finally, the committee wishes all its members a very happy Christmas and many more successful bowls games in the New Year.
