Full steam ahead for surf lifesaving competition season on South Coast

The provincial surf lifesaving championship calendar also brings the KZN junior championships to Winklespruit on 1 February.

WARNADOONE Surf Lifesaving Club will host the 2015 KZN South Surf Lifesaving Championship on Sunday, 18 January from 7.30am for surf lifesaving clubs from the South Coast.

Starting with the traditional march past of teams, with the club banners leading the way of competitors in their club uniforms, the championship will renew the old rivalries dating back to the 1920’s when the three Amanzimtoti clubs, Amanzimtoti, Warnadoone and Winklespruit Surf were founded, in traditional events no longer part of the national championships like craft rescue and reel alarm.

Competition will be fierce on the beach with the run, relay, sprint and flags events. The Warner Beach surf will once again challenge the competitors in surf events. Surf swim, single double and mixed surf ski, board, rescue tube, iron man and woman events not only test the strength and endurance of competitors, but is also very exciting for spectators as well.

Competitors have been training and doing voluntary beach duty during the December holiday to be in top shape to bring medals home to the South Coast in the 2015 KZN Open surf championships on 7 to 8 March and Lifesaving SA national surf championships held from 23 to 26 April. These will be hosted at Durban clubs.

The provincial surf lifesaving championship calendar also brings the KZN junior championships to Winklespruit on 1 February.

The KZN South nipper championship will be held in Scottburgh on 15 February and the provincial season will end with the KZN nipper championship at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club between 28 February and 1 March.
