UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) got a bit of stressful news this week, concerning Tim Clark regarding an injury he incurred while playing in the Sony Open in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago.

A few holes before the end on the final day of the open, Tim felt a searing pain in his ‘good’ elbow as he hit his shot into the green, which turns out that he has torn tendons (not sure how badly) in this region and will be out of action for a few of weeks.

Hopefully it’s not too serious and he won’t have to have an operation, getting back onto the fairways and greens soon. We all wish him well and a speedy recovery. Watch out for Garth Mulroy who, although hasn’t made the cut in his last couple of outings, is playing better and better golf every week. He is playing in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and our support goes out to him, as always. Congratulations to Brandon Grace who won the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters this week with a score of 66 in the final round, to go -19.

Wednesday’s prize giving sheet looked a bit different this week with one of the women taking the honours. Well done to Susi (Suriyanti) Suhonen who came in with 39 points to take first place with one of our visitors hot on her heels, Julian le Pront in second, counting out regular Wally Kent into third spot, both on 38. In fourth place was Andy Davidge with 37.

Saturday’s competition, the individual Stableford, was the first of the Widenham Trophy competition days to be played throughout the year. This month was the turn of Tom Naicker who was well clear of his opponents, with 44 excellent points, taking first place and the trophy. Well done, Tom. In second spot was Rob Mathias, with 4. ‘Our man’ Wally Kent was in the prizes yet again in third place, counting out Barrie Taylor into fourth place, both on 39. The jackpot was scooped by Rob Mathias with 10 points and the 2 Clubs this week belonged to Tom Naicker, Willie Ashton and Dave Mulroy, all on the fourth hole.

Next Friday evening, the women’s section is hosts a fundfaiser at the club and your contact is Lesa Vergottini, call her on 082-926-2041 to make a booking.

On Saturday, 31 January is the first round of the Alliance League – get your team names on the noticeboard – this competition is really great fun and very competitive.

Sunday, 1 February is the mixed doubles – green fees are only R120 per player and if you don’t have a partner, Annette will get one for you. Call her on 082-927-5013 but hurry up, time is getting short.

Last but by no means least – the club has re-instated the mid-week specials on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – call the office for more information. Please note that these ‘specials’ are not on competition days, Sundays or public holidays.
