CONGRATULATIONS to Doreen Salmond who became this year’s women’s handicap singles champion at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) this week by defeating Talla Stephens-Viviers in the finals.
Well done Doreen and congratulations also on being invited once again to play in the Port Natal senior masters competition to be held in July.
The whole club wishes them well in this challenging event against the top players in the district.
Twenty teams from eight clubs around the district enjoyed the beautiful weather and fun atmosphere at the Hypersure women’s winter tournament hosted by ABC last week. The competition comprises five games of 15 ends, with loads of prizes and good food in-between. Coming out on top were the Toti team of Doreen Salmond, Marion Crouch, Jane Coetzee and Adrienne Robbins, followed by B Whitehouse, L James, J Cliff and C Whitehouse of Scottburgh, with AMBC’s Rose Daniel, A Turk, Annetjie Kidd and B Lombard in third. Session prizes were won by the teams of Pam Chalder-Royle, Jenny Delport, Yvonne Hooper and Maggie Robertson; Elaine Critchlow, Joyce McRory, Norma Raath and Maureen Griffin; Susan Erasmus, Denise Bingham, Elmarie Young and Charlotte Kohl; Amanda Ninow, Vera Broskie, Jacqui Fouché and Linda McGregor; and Julie Sutherland, Yvonne Wright, Nita Meumann and Jennifer Greenslade.
Grateful thanks go to the main sponsor of the winter tournament, Peter Brown, his wife, Janetta and all the staff of Hypersure for their continued support and involvement with this event. Also to Allan Hawkins of Victory KwikSpar, Hettie van Rensburg for umpiring, Julie Sutherland and Liz Morgan-Davies for the organisation, Hennie and Maureen van der Poel for all the score-keeping, Pam Chalder-Royle and Liz Morgan-Davies for the donation of raffle prizes, the volunteer helpers Betty Sawyer, Jean Snyman and Toni Roberts, and all the managers and staff who work extra hard to ensure these events run smoothly.
Seven games in round one of the men’s handicap singles were played. In a close battle which saw Dallas Davis and Alec Stirzaker peeling on 19 shots on the 21st end, Alec managed to draw the last two shots needed to take the game and go forward to the next round. In three other close games Innocent Sithole managed to get the better of his brother William, Bill Williams beat Peter Barnes, and Carl van Heerden went down to Neil Oberholzer. Suffering bigger losses were Jeff van Belkum to Boet Els, Adie Fuller to Dave Kemp, and Ben Venter to Andrew Walker.
In open singles Don Saunders beat Robbie Roberts and Ian Crouch lost to long-time adversary Lofty van Tonder. Trevor Zulch goes through to the next round as Andy McDonald conceded their game; and Wessie vd Westhuizen won his novice game against Leon van Rensburg.
Despite only managing to get score on the board on the 8th end in their mixed pairs game, Clive and Meryl Hambley began scoring consistently against their opponents Gerald Chalder-Royle and Bernie Bretherton to level the scoreboard on the 17th end, and again on the 21st end. However, their valiant effort was not to be rewarded with success, and Gerald and Bernie managed to win the final end by one shot to clinch the win.
In women’s open singles Jeanne Alexander had a narrow loss to Marion Crouch, and in two games that lasted for 26 ends, Val de Kok lost to Julie Sutherland in open singles and Margaret van Belkum defeated Mardi Dovale in senior singles. Also in senior singles, Robyn Hutton lost to Pam Chalder-Royle. In another very close game Di Robinson and Nita Meumann lost to Elsie Walker and Nicky Stirzaker in nominated pairs.
In men’s inter-club league first division, Toti A beat Hillcrest A 5-2; second division Toti B lost 0-7 to Queensburgh A; third division Toti C lost 2-5 to Stella B; fifth division Toti D beat Hillcrest D 3-2; sixth division Toti E beat Umhlanga B 4-1; sixth division Toti F drew with Hillcrest E 2.5-2.5; eighth division Toti G had a bye.
At TGIF Guelfo Cobianchi won the 100 board, and Ian Crouch was not present to win the attendance draw, so the pot goes to R450 next week. Bobby Henderson’s number was drawn in the key draw, but no luck for him in finding the right key, so next week’s pay-out will be R1,370. Birthday greetings go to Wilma Richter, Sean Roberts and Pam Chalder-Royle, and get-well wishes to all who are not well.
