Davidge wins Individual Stableford in idyllic weather
Next Saturday, 25 July is the Widenham Trophy which is the Individual Stableford competition with social golf on Sunday.

SUCH a pity Tim Clark missed the Open at St Andrew’s due to a visa problem.
Hopefully he will play in the RBC Canadian Open next weekend since he is the defending Champion, having won the tournament last year. The next European tournament is the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, the following weekend on the Web.com tour (30 July) is the Utah championship. Not sure if Garth Mulroy will play in Utah – nonetheless, good luck to both Tim and Garth as they stride out onto the fairways of their respective tournaments.
On Wednesday, the competition was the usual Individual Stableford, played in almost idyllic weather after the cold snap on Monday and Tuesday. The competition was sponsored by Eagle Canyon Spur at the Galleria – many thanks to Johan Keet for organising the vouchers.
The winner was Andy Davidge on a great score of 44 points with Eric Morsner three shots off the pace in second spot with 41 points. Barrie Taylor took home the third prize, counting out Chris Viljoen into fourth slot, both with 37 points. Saturday was the seventh round of the Alliance League – Clyde Leisegang was warmly welcomed to the club and competition by club captain, Peter Toward at prizegiving. The competition was well-supported by the members – thank you all. The winners on an amazing 95 points were the ‘Bar Flies’ consisting of Jimmy Spear, Michelle van der Merwe, Wally Kent and Eric Morsner with the team ‘The Swingers’ – Annette Gillett, John Gillett, Rob Finlay and Andy Davidge taking second place with 91 points.
Well done to both the winning teams and to all the other teams playing in perfect afternoon weather. The jackpot was shared between Jimmy Spear and Andy Davidge, both with 11 points and the hidden birdie was found by Dean Naicker on the 18th hole. There were only two 2-Clubs – Andy Davidge on the 13th and Viv Naicker on the 17th. Chris Pillay had already left the club so the attendance draw will be carried over to next week. Wally Kent won the football sweep with Plymouth Argyle.
On Sunday, 19 July our Allerton team travelled to Kloof to play against Cato Ridge – and although it was a hard-fought match, Umkomaas went down but only by one point. Well done to all the players in the team – not going to mention names since most of you played very well and you know who you are. Better luck at the next match which will be played at Umkomaas. Home course advantage is a good thing, guys – don’t waste it.
Next Saturday, 25 July is the Widenham Trophy which is the Individual Stableford competition with social golf on Sunday. Contact the club to book a time on 039-973-1042. There will be the Composite League match on later in the morning at around 11am. Also next Sunday, our women venture down to Port Shepstone to play in the South Coast Regional championships – good luck, play well and travel safely. May all our teams enjoy the challenge.
An early reminder that youngsters under the age of 21, may play a round of golf at Umkomaas Golf Club from Monday to Friday and on Sundays after 11.30am for the princely sum of R20. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience and play on a course which launched both Tim Clark and Garth Mulroy into their professional golfing careers on the PGA Tour both in America and Europe. Handicaps are not too important at this stage but we do ask that you dress appropriately ie: collared shirt, proper shoes, your own bag and a cap. Please bring your ID if you are not obviously U21.
A gentle reminder – this time of the club’s fundraising day on Saturday, 29 August – we need sponsorships and prizes to make it a great day. Do be generous with both.
