How are blocked drains reason for rise and flooding of a river?
If a river is flooded, the obvious result of streets that are barely higher than sea level are also going to be flooded due to the back flow of such pipes.
EDITOR – ‘To Disgusted’, in the Sun, 17 July.
Although Beetge has already sorted this out on the front page of the South Coast Sun, 17 July, I still have to vent my surprise at ‘Disgusted’ in the first half of his letter.
Please explain to me how blocked drains are the reason for the rise and flooding of a river?
Every person with an ounce of grey matter knows that all storm water drains take all rain water run-off to the closest river, which in turn flows out to sea. Unless of course ‘Disgusted’ believes that (normally) rivers flow into storm water drains and then into our streets.
If a river is flooded, the obvious result of streets that are barely higher than sea level are also going to be flooded due to the back flow of such pipes.
There are people to blame regarding the frequent flooding of the Toti River, yet it certainly is not (this time) those who keep our drains free of debris. In fact, the flooded streets of Toti is a result of the complete opposite, it’s proof that the drains are flowing free, just the wrong way when in flood.
Granted our Toti CBD is a mess and derelict, yet blaming our flooded river/streets on blocked drains is pure stupidity. If the river was empty and streets were flooded, different story entirely.
For the record, I have no dealings with the municipality or the cleaning and up-keep of our streets. This said, you do later in your letter talk about foresight in pending disasters and awarded tenders.
