Varied fate for UGC’s league teams
Always popular at this time of the month, is the club's alliance league which was played with an almost full compliment of teams last Saturday.

BOTH Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) women’s and men’s league teams played in their relative matches last Sunday, 21 May, with the women at Amanzimtoti GC and the boys at home in Umkomaas.
All the results were mixed and very varied – some good and some not so good.
The men played Allerton league against Mt Edgecombe, 36 holes of fantastic golf but unfortunately lost by just one point. So disappointing since they all played very well but the better team won.
The captain thanks all the players for their dedication to the league and the club, by giving up their Sunday to play. A huge vote of thanks to Devlyn Fraser for making up the numbers at the last minute. The next Allerton match will be at Amanzimtoti GC.
The girls played their first club league match last Sunday at Amanzimtoti GC, but they too lost their match overall, going down 2/4 to Port Shepstone. Denise Nell and Michelle van der Merwe won their game, going one up on the 18th hole – a hard-fought game indeed. Unfortunately, Sabiha Bacaus and Natalie Singer went down on the 17th, as did Bryony Rogers and Linda Toward on the 15th. Their next match will be at Port Shepstone GC on 25 June. The senior women played their game at Scottburgh GC on Monday so their results will be in next week’s edition.
Wednesday saw quite a few visitors, with a warm welcome extended to Claude Osborne, Steve Lewis, Nigel Henson and Chris Banks. Local knowledge won on the day. Taking first prize was Rob Finlay on a score of 42 good points followed by Keith Vergottini in second spot with 38 points. John Thompson took third place on 36 points with Chris Viljoen in fourth slot, counting out Bryony Rogers into fifth place, both on 35 points.
The ever-popular club’s alliance league was played with an almost full complement of teams last Saturday. Club captain, Barrie Taylor welcomed the visitors. Winners this month were ‘The Bar Flies’ – Jimmy Spear, Michelle van der Merwe, Wally Kent and Dave Mulroy on a grand score of 95 points followed by ‘The Blue Brothers’ – Devlyn Fraser, Nelson Moonsamy, Saga Reddy and Mike Cromhout on a score of 91 points. Keith Vergottini was on hand to collect the jackpot prize with his 11 points but the hidden birdie will stay hidden on the 14th hole until next weekend. The kitty for the hidden birdie is growing steadily and will reach the grand total of R200 by Saturday, something to play for. Mike Harvard took home the prize in the non-skills department, the attendance draw.
This Saturday, 27 May is the long-awaited Sanlam Cancer Challenge. UGC appeals to all members and friends to support this worthy cause – there must be someone in your life who is battling this vicious disease and this a fantastic way of supporting cancer research to find a cure. There will be nearest the pin prizes on all the short holes, so make it a successful day by calling Sonny on 039-973-1042 to book your tee time.
On Sunday, 28 May there will be social golf with the Sunday ‘bash’ as well, starting at 10am for 10.30am, under the lapa on the first tee box. Anyone may play and there are cash prizes to be won.
Also on Sunday morning is the craft market in the car park from around 8am. Browse around, you may find something you may want to give as a gift or whatever takes your fancy. There are quite a few stalls to survey.
Due to the Sardine Run being held from 15 to 17 June, the next alliance league game will be a week earlier on Saturday, 10 June. To accommodate the industrial league players, the alliance league will be played on the second Saturday of the month and not on the third Saturday, as is the norm. All teams are urged to note these changes as it affects all the teams for future games.
Anyone with a team of four who wants to enter the ‘Sardine Run’ should call Sonny with their email address for an entry form or failing which, logon to the website, www.sardinegolf.co.za to find all the information you need. Any individual players looking for a game over the three-day period should call Scottburgh GC on 039-976-0041 and they will try their best to fit you into a team.
Once again, the Geriatrics play on Tuesdays and Fridays only, at reduced green fees, starting at 7am for 7.15am tee time. Call Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.
KidzGolf is picking up again, much to the delight of coach Devlyn. The youngsters meet at 8am on Saturday mornings – all are welcome to join in. Six-pin is also gaining in popularity on Friday afternoons, call Peter Toward to find out if there will be food available afterwards on 083-417-9766.
