Mambas’ Wild Coast farm ride an enthralling breakaway
Mambas accommodate all levels of fitness and skill, with the Fattis and Monis catering for beginners, people who haven’t ridden in a while for whatever reason and shorter distances.

ON the first Saturday of every month, the Amanzimtoti Cycling Club (ACC) organises a fun ‘away’ club ride for its mountain bike members, who are affectionately known as ‘Mambas’.
As last Saturday was the first Saturday in November, the Mambas travelled to Port Edward and rode Clearwater Farm’s routes.
These routes have been designed to exhilarate riders and trail runners alike and are ideally situated adjacent to the Umtamvuna River which is the natural divide between KZN and Transkei.
Mambas accommodate all levels of fitness and skill, with the Fattis and Monis catering for beginners, people who haven’t ridden in a while for whatever reason and shorter distances. The MTB Buddies are faster but the big difference between the two groups is the MTB Buddies don’t like to have long stops and cover more distance. They may ride different routes (at the same venue) and at different speeds, but it’s all about fellow club members taking a day out to enjoy each other’s company, ride a different track and have some good laughs. Next month the Mambas venture inland to Hilton and visitors are always welcome.
Another hugely successful work party was held on Sunday, 5 November, with even more members showing their passion and dedication to repair the damaged track around Amanzimtoti Sports Centre.
It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, sore muscles and blisters, but the track is up and running again and is open for all to use. There is an exhilarating mix of single-track, switchbacks, bridges and water crossings to make it an exciting but vigorous and riveting ride.
With summer now here, there is lots of light time for some early morning rides or late afternoon sessions. Anyone is welcome to ride the track to improve their skills any day but the club has booked the track for members to ride on Thursdays from 4.30pm to 6pm. Preferably three people should ride together as untoward incidents have occurred. And remember, the no helmet, no ride rule applies. Follow the track in the directions of the arrows and do not go against the flow of other riders.
The club is entering a new financial year which means membership fees are now due. They remain at a very reasonable R200 for members and R70 for scholars. Visit the club’s website for more details at www.amanzimtoticycle.co.za.
