AFTER much concern over what the weather had in store for Amanzimtoti Golf Club’s golfers over the weekend, the conditions turned out to be the best in many months.

On Sunday the field of just over 100 players hit the fairways in support of Lodge Grantleigh’s annual fundraising day, and couldn’t have asked for more. From the outset the day was all about generating much needed funds, and the women from Memories did their bit as usual, taking prisoners of war and doling out bandages and medicine to those in need. It is also quite unusual to try and play golf blindfolded, but believe it or not that also happened. Congratulations to all involved in making the day such a success.

On Saturday it was the turn of the greenkeeper to exact revenge on those who constantly bemoan pin placings. Several holes were stinkers with the pin placed on slippery slopes, and having to use a driver on the short seventh also proved tricky.

Having said that, the scores were magnificent, and the men obviously enjoyed playing off the women’s tee box on the second and 18th, while the women found out just how easy it is to play the 18th when using an elevated tee box.

With all four scores to count all round and a bit of multiplication thrown in for good measure, the team of Murry Dalton, Ronnie Nair, Peter Dalton and Hayden Haggie made merry, shooting a huge score of 181 points. In second place three shots back was Mark Cowie, Jason and Kelvin van Rensburg and Callum Haggie. Johan Roux was nearest the pin on the 7th, and Nico Vogel did the same on the 15th.

The women played a slightly different format to allow for odd numbers, and used a threeball, two scores to count all round with the multiplication in the mix for good measure. Top honours went to Atri Wilson, Gill Symons and their swinger Colleen Smit on 69, one point ahead of Lynette Roodt, Sue Boucher and Francis Hoole. Sue Daniels was nearest the pin on the 17th.

Remember to contact Lea on 083-300-7521 to book your child’s place at the Christmas tree next Saturday, 9 December.

The golfers will play their annual turkey trot, the children’s party starts at 3pm and Father Christmas will arrive to hand out the presents at 4pm. There will be a ‘bring and braai’ afterwards, fires provided but take your own meat, salads, spanners and so on, as this should prove to be a very festive afternoon.

Another date to memorise and this shouldn’t interfere too much with that other four letter word (‘work’), is Friday, 15 December. The club will hold a par three competition over holes 16 through 19, teeing off from 4pm with the last tee-off time at 5.30pm. Go on down and join in the fun.

If you wish to organise an event for your company or even just a social for friends, contact the office on 031-902-1166 and chat to Jenny. AGC’s facilities are fantastic with both indoor and outdoor options, full catering facilities available and the prices on refreshments are good.

Players will have seen the new ‘environmentally sensitive area’ signs alongside the north side of the 10th and all along the left-hand side of the sixth hole. Note that should your ball go into this area you may not go stomping around to find it, or even attempt to play it. Drop a ball at point of entry and play from there with the regular one shot penalty.

As always Toti welcomes visitors to the area to come down and play golf on our superb course. Bring the family along, and take a break while the children entertain themselves on the playground equipment. The driving range is open most days, so take the opportunity to hone your skills. Phone the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book a tee off time or for more details.
