GREAT news reached Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) last weekend, that one of its junior members, Tash Naicker had a clean sweep at the Wyebank Golf Club prize-giving on Saturday night.
He not only won the coveted ‘player of the year’ trophy but both the Grand Slam championships and the player’s player award.
This is a remarkable achievement for a 16-year-old scholar who represents Amanzimtoti High School as captain of the golf team and UGC. Congratulations, Tash, from all at UGC – your progress will certainly be watched in the future. The Naicker family are extremely proud.
With the course under water yet again last Wednesday, there was no competition.
The women held their annual fourball mixed alliance competition last Saturday and what a wonderful day it turned out to be. The women arranged for the craft market stalls to be on the first tee with music to entertain everyone. And then the gale-force wind blew through, upsetting everything. Despite the wind, all the players had a wonderful day of hilarity, fun and plenty of golf. Thanks to all the women for organising the day so successfully. Winners were Dennis and Cathy Kamstra and Elma and Graham Coxell on 93 points with Team Gilliver/Morris (Peter, Tanith, Peter and Alex) from Scottburgh Golf Club in second place with 89 points. Scooping third spot were Robbie Small, Jimmy Pickavance, Natalie Singer and Lesley Fraser losing on the count out, also with 89 points. There were a few two-clubs as well – Viv Naicker – fourth; Natalie Singer and Nelson Moonsamy – ninth and Wally Kent on the 13th. The R10,000 draw also took place at prize-giving, in which Russell Wilcox took the first prize (thanks to Jimmy Pickavance) ticket 0305. Taking second prize of R3,000 went to the very first ticket in this year’s batch (0001) – shared by Bing Opie, Keith Vergottini, Peter Toward and Dave Mulroy. The last prize of R1,000 went to Johan van der Merwe with ticket 0119 (Wally Kent’s booklet). Congratulations to all the winners.
This Saturday, 16 December will be the absolute final game of the alliance league for 2017. The prizes will be sponsored by Bruce Sutcliffe and hopefully the wind will stay away in the afternoon.
