Bing Opie wins UGC ‘golfer of the month’ mug

The B division was won by Warren Taylor with his 65 nett (not a usual participant in a Medal comp!) with Dave Kemp as runner-up with a 74 nett.

WITH many of the visitors and holidaymakers on their way back home, the children back at school and mom sighing with relief that she has the house to herself once again, Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) too, is getting back to normal.

The Christmas season was rather hectic in a wonderful way, making new friends and re-acquainting ourselves with the many friends made over the years.

Although the weather wasn’t all that kind to them on quite a few days with much needed rain, the hot days were really hot and humid as only KZN can be in summer.

The Wednesday individual stableford competition was well supported by members and visitors John Thompson and Gary Pickavance. Once again John Thompson took the first prize with his 46 points, with Barrie Taylor right behind him in second place with 43 points. In third slot was Peter Bond with 40 points, with Alwyn Stander swooping in to take the last prize on offer, in fourth place on 39 points.

On Saturday, 13 January, the club welcomed visitors Dave Rickards, Michael Pretorius, social member Michael Marè and an old but new member and recently retired Raymond Ntobela to the first monthly medal and mug competition of 2018. The A division was won by Patrick Ndlovu with a 70 nett followed closely by Nelson Moonsamy with 71 nett. The B division was won by Warren Taylor with his 65 nett (not a usual participant in a medal competition), with Dave Kemp as runner-up with a 74 nett. Once again, the C division led the way. No-one is sure what Bing Opie had for breakfast but his 62 nett won him the C division for a second time in about six months. Peter Toward was the runner-up with a 70 nett.

The women didn’t fare as well as they usually do. Sabiha Bacaus was the winner this month with a 76 nett with Natalie Singer runner-up with an 80 nett. The women’s ‘least putts compo’ was also won by Sabiha with 31 putts for her round. The jackpot was won by Jacques Hulley on his own with 11 points but the hidden birdie (1st hole) and the attendance draw (Dominic Jarvis) will both be carried over to this weekend. There were two two-clubs, both on the ninth hole, by Patrick Ndlovu and Jacques Hulley. Well done to all the players – the weather was just right for good scores, as reflected above.

Congratulations to Bing Opie for winning the ‘golfer of the month’ mug.

This Saturday, 20 January, the fourball betterball stableford competition gets underway with social golf on Sunday, 21 January. A reminder that the Sunday ‘bash’ takes place this Sunday, with registration starting at around 9.30am to tee off at 10.30am. All are welcome to play in this individual stableford competition. There are cash prizes to be won and the golf is guaranteed to be very competitive. If you think you can beat the ‘boys’, go down and challenge some of the best golfers around.

The ‘early bird’ golf on Tuesdays and Friday mornings before 7.30am has proved to be popular, especially during the holidays. This special will continue into the forseeable future – at R75 per round of 18 holes for everyone. Call the club on 039-973-1042 especially if you need to hire a cart or phone Graham on 083-325-5705 – he will be more than happy to meet and play golf with you.
