Non-professional soccer on hold

While initially disappointed that players will be allowed back on the field, chairperson of the football club, Zenzo Ncube has welcomed the decision.

Amanzimtoti United Football Club will not resume training sessions and games for the upcoming season. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has suspended all non-professional football in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases. The matter will be reviewed by Sunday, 31 January when the association will make further risk assessments and advice. While initially disappointed that players will be allowed back on the field, chairperson of the football club, Zenzo Ncube has welcomed the decision.

“We must all do our part to stop the spread of this dreadful disease. For now, we urge all our players to stay at home and be safe till further notice. We encourage players to try to remain fit and active while at home. Toti United FC looks forward to hitting the ground running when we can.”

This extraordinary step is taken in the interest of the safety of players, technical staff, administrators, match officials, the media and all other personnel involved in the organisation and staging of matches and other football events.

“Professional football will continue under the measures already being implemented by the National Soccer League,” said the head of communications for SAFA, Dominic Chimhavi. “This must, however, be done in compliance with the applicable protocols of Government’s Risk-Adjusted Strategy of the Disaster Management Act with respect to the curfew and closure of venues and as it is further explained in the Directives issues by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture. Stay safe, sanitise or wash your hands, wear a mask and keep a safe social distance.”
