Rugby runs in Mark’s blood

The club's philosophy is to play an attractive brand of rugby, instill respect for one another and the opposition on and off the field, play hard, but fair at all times and be disciplined.

Mark Cameron was recently appointed as director of rugby at Amanzimtoti Rugby Club.  He is also the head coach at the club and head of rugby at Kingsway High School. Mark, who eagerly welcomed his new role, is highly passionate about the sport and has big plans for the club.

“I coached at Amanzimtoti Rugby Club for many years. We had a good blend of quality local players and coaching staff. I left the club to coach in the Varsity Shield and continued coaching at various clubs after that. Not coming back to Amanzimtoti Rugby Club, was never an option. It was not a difficult decision to make when offered the opportunity to join the coaching staff in 2019 with the vision that the club has to take us forward over the next five years.”

Part of his responsibilities will be to work with all coaches including coaches for mini U6, U11, colts U12 to U18, combined schools U19, U20 and senior.

“I am highly passionate about rugby and the club. We want to develop the youth as well as coaches.” When asked about the highlights of his career, Mark said, “There are too many to mention from a coaching point of view. Taking the Sharks Youth Club U18s to the final in the very first inter-provincial tournament hosted by the Sharks in 2018 and winning the final probably stands out. Being able to give back to rugby and playing a part in so many lives is an honour. Seeing players take responsibility for their part within our structures and expressing themselves on the field, but ultimately enjoying playing this wonderful game. It is also incredible to see players develop and go on to make a career for themselves.”

“Being appointed as the director of rugby is a huge honour and comes with a lot of responsibility. I am looking forward to working with the committee, coaching staff and players to take Amanzimtoti Rugby Club to the next level. My vision for the club is to be the best by improving our rugby performance every time we take the field. I want to help our top performers succeed on the provincial stage and to raise the levels of participation across all leagues. We aim to unite Amanzimtoti Rugby Club to be the best in KZN and to win a promotion to the Gold Cup.
Finally, I aim to make the club become well supported by our community and sponsors, and one that our community and sponsors will be proud of.”

Mark is married to Marie and they have four children. He also co-hosts a rugby chat show on an online radio station.
