Amanzimtoti Tennis Club juniors perform exceptionally
"Juniors are welcomed by the senior players on a Saturday and Wednesday to join in club tennis, the oldies can still teach the youngsters a trick or two.”
Amanzimtoti Tennis Club juniors took on the KZN Schools Trails where they had an amazing experience last weekend in Westridge. Cliffie Botha played in the U15 section and drew against the five seed player, Matthew Wilson.
“Matthew had to play his best tennis to finally beat Cliffie 6-3, 6-3,” said juniors’ coach, Loraine Osborne.
Silke Bester, also in the U15 age group, lost to a very hard-hitting match to Zahra Ferreira, seven seed, but not before hitting a few aces and returning some bullets hit at her from all angles. Ansu Botha played in the U13 age group. Ansu lost in the first round to the two seed player, Neha Singh, but went on to win her next match in the back draw.
“This proved to be a mentally tough match for Ansu and eventually an official had to be called on to the court. Ansu went on to win the match in the third set tiebreaker. Ansu will still be in the U13 age group next year so the experience she gained from the weekend will be hugely beneficial in future matches.”
Another Toti junior, Siphokazi Maphumulo, won the green section in a Lollipop Mini Series tournament that took place recently. Siphokazi is eleven-years-old and with the help of her father she is moving up the ranks fast.
“When Toti Tennis Club holds fun Saturday afternoon events all the juniors are able to participate as well. This, as well as parents practising with their children, contributes to the juniors becoming successful players. Juniors are welcomed by the senior players on a Saturday and Wednesday to join in club tennis, the oldies can still teach the youngsters a trick or two.”
The club is in the middle of resurfacing its five courts. Hats of to the committee for achieving this under very difficult times.
