Tiaan set to represent KZN at Interprovincial Surf Champs

Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club's Tiaan Lyon has been selected for the KZN youth team after placing first overall in his division.

TIAAN Lyon of Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club has been selected for the KZN youth team set to represent KZN in the Interprovincial Surf Championships this weekend.

The selection for the KZN team comes after placing first overall in the U19 male division at a recent competition between all KZN lifesaving clubs.

Lyon said the yearly competition is based on a point system to determine the best and fastest in each category.

Apart from the overall trophy win, he also obtained six medals. He placed third in the U19 male beach flags, first in beach run, first in run-swim-run, second in ironman, third in board race and first in surf-swim.

Despite a few mishaps and not getting top three in all his events on the day, he said he enjoyed it and was happy with his overall results.

Lyon, an active member and lifeguard at the Winkle Club, said it is disappointing to see the state of Winkle Beach.

“The ongoing sewage issues and river that now runs across the beach, as opposed to directly into the ocean, makes it nearly impossible to train at the beach that was once my go-to place on the weekend,” he said.

Lyon said that when he is not training at a nearby beach, he is at the Durban Surf Lifesaving Club which welcomes all clubs for training.

On Saturday, May 27, he will be representing KZN in the DHL Lifesaving SA Interprovincial Surf Championships at Addington Beach, Durban, in hopes of being selected for the SA team.
