Amanzimtoti cyclist conquers gruelling Amashova

Sarah Littleton conquered the strong winds and heavy rainfall to cross the finish line first in the Women's E-Bike category.

SARAH Littleton (37) of Amanzimtoti received first place in the Women’s E-Bike category at the Amashova Durban Classic on October 22.

The 106km race, which follows the historic ‘Comrades’ route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, is one of her favourite races. Despite challenging conditions with strong winds and heavy rainfall, she did not consider it her worst race.

Littleton, along with her husband, Wesley, closely monitored the weather leading up to the race to prepare as best they could.

“Many riders withdrew from the race on the day, leaving the last nine pages of the results empty. Many of those have upcoming races and did not want to risk getting injured,” she said.

The East Coast Cycling Club member, whose goal was just to finish the race, completed it in a time of 03:29:57, earning her the top spot in the women’s division and second overall in the category. “I trained hard for this race – consistency is definitely key,” said Littleton.

Cycling is a significant part of the couple’s lifestyle, and they cycle about 100km every weekend.

Littleton started taking road cycling seriously in 2021, however, she has always enjoyed mountain bike riding.

Her upcoming races are the five-day Tour du Cap and Cape Town Cycle Tour in March, as well as the aQuellé Tour Durban in April.
