Amanzimtoti athletes brave the heat at Scottburgh Half-Marathon and 10km

For the third consecutive year, Amanzimtoti Athletic Club had the most entries in the race.

FIFTY-SEVEN Amanzimtoti Athletic Club (AAC) members braved the heat as they took on the Scottburgh Half-Marathon and 10km on January 14.

The race, hosted by Scottburgh Athletic Club (SAC), included a 21.1km and a 10km and, this year, incorporated the KZNA 10K Championships, which saw top runners from around the province participating. It is run on an out-and-back course from Scottburgh Golf Club towards the internationally acclaimed dive hotspot of Umkomaas and the Aliwal Shoal.

SAC’s chairperson, Dana Daniels, said there were 92 clubs with over 700 runners taking part.

“Toti was the club with the most entries for the third year in a row, so we want to say a huge thank you for their support,” she said.

Due to the extreme heat at this time of the year, Daniels said they had 12 refreshment stations sponsored by various local companies who managed to keep the drinks cold. “Some tables had water guns and sprayers which the runners loved,” she said.

AAC’s Liesl Fourie congratulated the 57 members who raced in the excruciating heat. “A special congratulations to Margaret Botes, Mike Raasch and Slindile Mngomezulu, who won prizes at the 10km event in their respective age categories,” she said.

The club also congratulated Thierry Pletinckx for his podium finish in the 21.1km Men’s 50–59 event in a time of 01:32:29.

Daniels thanked all the athletes and their supporters as well as the sponsors for contributing to the success of the race.
