Amanzimtoti Cricket Club’s first team tops the premier league log

The first team successfully topped the KZN Castle Premier League after a home match on January 21.

AMANZIMTOTI Cricket Club’s (ACC) first team topped the premier league log at the weekend, while the veterans’ match was played as a friendly.

ACC’s first team hosted the African Warriors Cricket Club for a KZN Castle Premier League match at the Toti Oval on January 21. First-team captain Tegan Naidoo lost the toss and was asked to bowl first.

The club’s scribe, Peter Lonie, said a 2-over burst from both ends yielded no success for the hosts, but JJ Fourie changed that with a wicket in the 10th over when he had one of the African Warriors openers brilliantly caught by Jarryd Michaux.

“A wicket a piece for spin bowlers Gareth Lonie and Dylan Labuschagne had the visitors 47/3 before a rebuild of their innings took them to 87/3 at the 25-over mark. A further wicket for Michaux kept the home side in the game before an outstanding bowling spell from ACC’s skipper saw the visitors collapse from 123/4 to 150 all out. Naidoo’s 5/24 in 6.5 overs was the first 5-wicket haul for the club’s first team this season,” he said.

ACC, who needed 151 runs to win, got off to a positive start with opening batsmen Fourie and Lonie negotiating the 10-over power play without losing a wicket. Lonie said Fourie was dismissed with the opening partnership one run shy of 50 and a further wicket on the same score saw the hosts at 49/2 after 14 overs.

“Michaux added 13 runs with the bat before Dillion Bryan joined Lonie, and the two batted with positive intent. Lonie went past 50 and was dismissed for a well-played 64. Bryan was out, caught, for a well-constructed 31 which included just one boundary,” he said.

Corné Nel and Naidoo were at the crease when the hosts reached the target of 151 with Nel scoring the winning run in the 39th over – ensuring the bonus point win and bringing the team to the top of the log.

The KZN Cricket Union cancelled all veterans’ games scheduled for January 20 because many pitches were unprepared due to last week’s rain. However, ACC turned their league match against Harlequins Cricket Club into a friendly.
