Michelle Richards, a proud member of the Warnadoone Skiboat Club and Natal Rod and Reel in Durban, began her international competitive journey in 2024 after being awarded her Protea Colours. This marks a significant milestone, as the 2024 ILTT will be the first time the South African Deep Sea Angling Association (SADSAA) sends an all-female Protea team to the tournament.

Joining Richards on this historic team are Mariette Hendriksz from Gauteng and Candice Coetzer from the Eastern Cape. The tournament also sees a strong men’s team flying the flag for South Africa.

In a statement, SADSAA congratulated both teams, celebrating their dedication and trailblazing spirit.

“On behalf of SADSAA, we extend our best wishes and heartfelt support to the two Protea teams as they embark on their long journey to Guatemala to represent our nation on the international stage. This is more than just a trip – it’s a testament to the years of dedication, countless hours on the water, and the unshakable spirit that defines South African anglers. You are not only flying the flag for your country but also for every club and angler who stood beside you along the way. As you set off on this incredible adventure, know that the entire South Africa is behind you. Travel safely, fish hard, and wear the green and gold with pride,” it said.
