Amanzimtoti Cricket Club teams claim victory

Brilliant games of cricket were played by all three of Amanzimtoti Cricket Club's teams.

AMANZIMTOTI Cricket Club’s (ACC) first, second and veterans’ team all claimed victory on March 2 and 3, with the first team winning by a mere one wicket.

ACC’s first team played an away match at Crusaders Cricket Club in round one of the ‘top 6 – bottom 6’ section of the KZN Castle Premier League on Sunday. Captain Jarryd Michaux won the toss and asked Crusaders to bat first.

The club’s scribe, Peter Lonie, said Crusaders scored 236/9 in their 50 overs with JJ Fourie being the stand-out bowler for ACC, bagging 4 wickets.

“Setting a target of 237 to win, ACC’s batsmen played with positive intent and self-belief from the outset. Gareth Lonie contributed 44 runs at the top of the order, and Michaux top-scored for the visitors with a well-constructed innings of 64 runs. Keeping ACC in contention, however, was the lower order of Sheldon Maistry (21), Dylan Labuschagne (13*) and a remarkable innings from JJ Fourie who, batting at number 9, scored an unbeaten 44 runs. ACC were 226/9 with 2 balls to be bowled,” he said.

Fourie hit the penultimate ball for 6, taking the score to 232/9 – meaning 4 runs to tie the match and 5 runs to win the match. “Fourie then calmly dispatched the last ball over the rope, getting ACC over the line to win by an extraordinary 1 wicket,” said Lonie.

ACC’s veterans’ team beat Chatsworth United Cricket Club by 14 runs on Saturday in a match played on Toti’s main oval. Lonie said that while winning the toss and batting first, ACC scored 213/9 in 30 overs with Johan van Niekerk top-scoring with 79 runs, ably assisted by Graham Heine (32) and Chris Cronje (20).

“The target of 214 to win was too much for Chatsworth who were bowled out for 199, giving ACC a win by 14 runs. Marc Shepard bagged 3 wickets, Leon van der Westhuizen 2, with Bennie Benade and Hendrik Nienaber bagging 1 wicket each,” he said.

ACC’s second team secured a 10-wicket win over Chatsworth Sporting Cricket Club in a T20 played on Toti’s second oval on Sunday. “Chatsworth Sporting won the toss, batted first and scored 104/7 in 20 overs. ACC made easy work of the chase, reaching the target of 105 in just 12.2 overs,” said Lonie.
