Thubelihle Banda, a member of Siyaphambili Surfski Club, has participated in many local and national canoeing championships. In its ninth year, the ICF Ocean Racing World Championships brings the best of the best in canoeing, and Banda will be honoured to be among them.

“It’s been tough training for the event, but I’m still going to do some more,” he said.

The event offers three routes, depending on wind direction and other weather conditions. In the event of a strong enough south-west wind, the race will start at DUC and finish at Westbrook beach (34km). In the event of a strong enough north-east wind, the race will be held from DUC to Amanzimtoti (28km). In the event of benign conditions, with no significant downwind assistance, the course will be an “out and back” course to Umhlanga Rocks and back, from DUC (25km).
