KZN figure skating team to compete in Gauteng

For the first time in years, a full team of figure skaters is being sent to compete to represent KZN in an inter-provincial tournament.

STEADY, consistent progress has paid off as KZN Figure Skating is sending a talented team of 10 athletes, three of which are from Amanzimtoti, to compete at the Gauteng Inter-Provincial Figure Skating Championship from March 15-17.

Jo Cossavella of KZN Figure Skating said that this event represents far more than a championship for KZN, it marks a powerful milestone in a long and determined journey of rebuilding figure skating in the province.

“In 2022, KZN had just one skater competing at an inter-provincial championship. In 2023, that number grew to two. Now, for the first time in six years, we are sending 10 skaters,” said Cossavella.

The Gauteng Stars of Tomorrow 2026 platform will allow young and emerging skaters to compete, pass tests, and showcase their skills. Representing this category for KZN are Alex Bothma from Amanzimtoti, who attends Athlone Park Primary School, Mzande Mduli from Pennington, a learner at Crawford College La Lucia International, and Letho Gwala from uMlazi, who attends Amanzimtoti Primary School.

In the championship category of the Competitive Solo Figure Skating Section, KZN will be represented in the silver division by Cassidy Baker from Scottburgh, Tanique Jansen, Amarah Peer from Durban, Isabella Reyneke from Glenwood and Mia Stannard. Competing in the gold division are Ester Horne and Zach Morgan.

“Every skater and every parent is part of this journey, and together, we continue building a stronger future for figure skating in KwaZulu-Natal. We are proud of every athlete and grateful to every parent who has supported this journey with patience, belief, and commitment,” said Cossavella.
