Amanzimtoti hockey teams clash in grand final

It was a high-stakes Amanzimtoti derby between local high school hockey teams for the SPAR Schoolgirls' Hockey Challenge.

IT WAS a big day for Amanzimtoti High School’s (AHS) hockey team as they hoisted the trophy for the seventh time in the Durban South regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirl’s Hockey Challenge on March 7 at 3 Schools Trust.

Marking the first time Amanzimtoti schools, AHS and defending champions Kingsway High School (KHS), met in the finals, the stakes were high.

Publicist Sophie Thompson said that the two teams met in the first fixture of the tournament and the final, both match-ups going the way of AHS.

“The first score had AHS 3-0 up, but their persistent neighbours dug deep, not giving AHS much freedom in their circle. With only 76 seconds on the clock, Toti fired off their first shot but in haste, fumbled the attempt and Kingsway’s keeper, Nosipho Mhlongo, easily redirected the shot. Minutes later, AHS earned their first of two short corners, but both set pieces made no impact to the scoreline. Kingsway gained confidence and turned the possession around, taking the ball up several times into the Toti circle but were unable to penetrate the defence,” said Thompson.

Kingsway High School’s Sisipho Mathenjwa works hard to keep the ball away from top shooter, Nadine Smit from Amanzimtoti High School.

Regulation time saw both teams goalless and the regional final headed to penalties. Thompson said that AHS wasted no time in achieving a sensational penalty shoot-out victory.
