Hip hop festival gains ground

It's all systems go for the second annual KwaMakutha Hip-Hop Festival.

This year the festival, which takes place on Sunday, 15 December, promises to be bigger and better. “The KZN department of arts and culture has agreed to support the event, which we are very happy about,” said organiser, Siyabonga Ntlola. “Galleria will sponsor prizes for the winners, Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism will help with marketing and Shoreline Beverages will sponsor cooldrinks, which we will hand out for free on the day.”

The event will be split into two. In the daytime there is an event for the youth under 21, with hip-hop, dance and poetry where no alcohol will be allowed. In the evening DJs will play house and kwaito, plus a fashion show showcasing local designers, with alcohol on sale. “We still need more artists and designers to participate,” said Siyabonga. Contact him on 072-379-3566.

Siyabonga recently helped organise auditions for the Department of Arts and Culture to select hip hop artists for an event taking place on Durban beachfront on 29 December. “Five KwaMakutha artists were selected to perform. Those local artists will get paid to perform, so I am happy they were selected and hopefully it is a positive start to their careers. It has been kept a secret who was selected and all will be revealed when they perform at the KwaMakutha Hip-Hop Festival.”

Siyabonga urges hip hop artists in the greater Toti area to contact him as he can introduce them to the department to help with their careers.
