SOWETO: Tired of travelling to other parts of the city to experience outdoor adventures?
Brothers Kgomotso and Suping Pooe decided to bring the fun into Soweto where they have their quad and go-karting as well as paintball business up and running. After the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was staged in South Africa, they have launched Soweto Outdoor Adventures.
“We decided the start with quad bikes, go-karting and also paintball,” said Kgomotso. “But needed to find the right premises. Then during the World Cup we met the person who owned the land where the two Soweto Towers are and ever since we have been running our business there.”
Their business was recognised by Hansa Pilsener, who endorses people who follow their dreams and salute them for their real stories about how they started their business. The campaign was launched in August and the Pooe brothers’ story on how they initiated their business caught the attention of “Cheers to the Dreamers” from Hansa Pilsener.
Kgomotso grew up with webbed fingers and says that as a child he was always told that people with webbed fingers had money and were designed for greatness.
“I always thought that I had to follow my dream by starting my own business. But it was difficult, because we live in Soweto and every outdoor adventure is situated in the nicer parts of Johannesburg. We didn’t have any money to go that far, but realised there is nothing in Soweto,” said Kgomotso. “Then we had a look at the Soweto Towers and knew that we had to start there.”
Soweto Outdoors Adventures have grown from portable toilets to having a proper built structures with entertainment areas. Tours through Soweto on quad bikes from where they visit Nelson Mandela’s old house, ride through squatter camps, taste township skop to smileys and magwenya.
“Being recognised by Hansa means we are doing something great. It’s not just one pat on the back but 20 and encourages me to get going. Hansa has been amazing with their support and our business has grown so much that we accommodate tourist from abroad.”
