ROSEACRE – Residents and staff of Johannesburg Society for the Blind (JSB), marked World AIDS day 2013 by putting into practice the call by the Johannesburg AIDS Council to “Get Wise, Get Tested”.

JSB partnered with South Hills Clinic who came to do the HIV tests on site. A total of 34 people presented for testing.

The day started off by a “call to action” from the CEO of JSB, Ms Vangile Nyamathe who implored each individual to play a role in contributing to the quest for zero HIV infections. JSB, through its HIV/AIDS Sees No Disability Project and the Gender Desk, is making its mark by improving access to information and HCT services to people with disabilities in general.

Also on hand were speakers from SANCA and SAMAG who spoke about the linkages between HIV and drug abuse and men’s responsibilities, respectively.

The day ended with the signing of a “Wall of Memory” in remembrance of people who are living with HIV and those who have since passed on. This partnership with like-minded stakeholders was testimony of how the gap between marginalised sub-groups and the mainstream can be bridged in ensuring that every South African can personalise the risk of HIV infection and make a positive impact in turning the tide.
