*Gauteng honours brilliance. Top learners from government schools were honoured with bursaries worth R50 000 each. Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and her MEC for Education Barbara Creecy presented the R128 million cheque to the learners.
*Icons at Sports Awards. Two of South Africa’s well known sport icons, Lucas Radebe and Natalie du Toit, as well as French rugby legend Serge Betsen, came together to create awareness of Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards.
*South Hills house in ashes. Residents witnessed a house burnt down. It is believed that the fire was to spite the owner. An eyewitness, who is also the neighbour, said this particular house used to be rented out to tenants who worked at the shop of the owner in the area.
*Super Eagles fly high. Nigeria won the AFCON 2013 after 19 years. They beat Bukina Faso, about 90 000 spectators witnessed the coach Stephen Keshi lift the trophy. Keshi became the second player/coach to won the AFCON title both as a player and the coach. Nigeria won it in 1994.
*Tragic accident leaves five dead. Swartkoppies/Main Road became a death road on February 19 when a truck smashes into the back of five vehicles causing five explosions.
